1890, First Edition. London : Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington. Good set only in contemporary gilt-illustrated red cloth boards, now somewhat dust-dulled. Vol. 2 boards stained along the outer margins, with illustration becoming illegible. Corners bumped, with panel edges worn; joints and endbands somewhat rubbed, the latter fraying slightly. Rear hinge vol. 1 cracked, with cloth joints holding. Vol. 2 front endpaper and a rear blank show some doodles in pencil. Preliminary and final leaves foxed; edges the same, occasionally reaching the margins. Interior text remains sound and clean on the whole, with isolated foxing and dust smudges. Some vol. 2 leaves show tears to the top margin without loss. A very serviceable set overall. Item #469334
