Physical description: x, 548 pages ; 25 cm. Contents: The Oxford Dictionary of Art is a wide-ranging and up-to-date guide to the art of the western world from the 5th century BC to the present day. In 3,000 succinct and highly readable entries, it surveys the whole subject, taking in drawing, painting, and sculpture, and touching on many aspects of the decorative or 'applied' arts. The work draws on the well known Oxford Companions to Art, Twentieth-Century Art, and the Decorative Arts, written by a large number of distinguished contributors and edited by Harold Osbome. But it supplements these works with hundreds of entries covering the new generation of artists and introducing topics omitted from the Companions reflecting the shifts in perception and judgement that are a continuing element in art history. Critiques of all the major artists up to the present day provide a careful balance of fact and appraisal, while 'thumbnail sketches' draw attention to many who are less well known. Other important groups within the art world also receive attention: great patrons and collectors such as the Gonzaga family and Henry Clay Frick; art historians of the caliber of Rewald, Panofsky, and Blunt; and art dealers such as Paul Durand-Ruel and Joseph Duveen. Wherever possible, locations of works of art are given; in addition the principal galleries have individual entries. Art terms and techniques are fully explained, and all significant movements, groups, styles, and concepts are covered -- from Byzantine to Junk art, 'the sublime' to the Ashcan School, and Der Blaue Reiter to the Antipodeans. Subjects: Art dictionnaires. Art ; Encyclopedias. Visual arts. Artists Biographical dictionaries.
